Pipeline Patrol Just Got a Single Brain

Forsite's PatrolView unifies pipeline patrol, leak detection, and DOT compliance into one AI system

Forsite introduced PatrolView on July 15, an aerial intelligence platform designed to combine pipeline patrol, leak detection, threat monitoring and federal compliance tracking into a single system. Several North American pipeline operators have already adopted the technology, according to company statements, a sign of movement away from the fragmented monitoring tools that have long complicated safety oversight in the industry.

The platform's core innovation lies in integration rather than any single sensor. PatrolView layers three technologies: hyperspectral sensing for liquid leak detection, artificial intelligence trained to identify eleven categories of pipeline risk, and LiDAR systems that track ground movement near pipeline routes. Each stream feeds into one operating picture, which company officials say eliminates gaps that arise when separate systems fail to communicate. Kris Covey, Forsite's vice president of oil and gas, said the goal was to "replace multiple standalone monitoring programs with a unified operating picture."

For operators, the appeal is largely practical. Consolidating vendors and dashboards into one compliance-ready record could simplify reporting under Department of Transportation rules, a task that has grown more complex as regulators and insurers push for continuous documentation. Flyscan Systems is listed among the technical partners supporting the platform's aerial data architecture, suggesting the effort draws on broader collaboration across the sector.

Skeptics of rapid platform consolidation might note that unifying disparate data streams carries its own risks, since a single system failure could disrupt monitoring across multiple functions at once. Still, for an industry facing aging infrastructure and tighter environmental scrutiny, the tradeoff may prove worthwhile if it means faster detection of leaks and structural threats.

PatrolView's early deployments position it as a test case for how much monitoring efficiency the industry can gain by merging previously siloed systems. Whether that consolidation improves safety outcomes at scale, rather than simply administrative convenience, remains to be demonstrated. The results could shape how pipeline operators approach monitoring infrastructure in the years ahead.
