Honeywell's Experion Cognition embeds probabilistic AI into process control, targeting autonomous plant operations from Q3 2026

At a petrochemical facility on the edge of Abu Dhabi, an AI system watched for trouble. Operators at Borouge's plant in the United Arab Emirates ran Honeywell's new control platform through a live proof-of-concept, testing whether artificial intelligence could detect anomalies, recommend corrective actions, and automate responses without sidelining human judgment.
Honeywell has since announced Experion Cognition, a distributed control platform built around probabilistic AI embedded directly into the control layer rather than layered onto existing systems. Commercial availability is targeted for the third quarter of 2026.
Jason Urso, chief technology officer of Honeywell Industrial Automation, described the platform's ambition in terms of human experience. "It's like having the company's best expert at the operator's side," he said, "helping someone less experienced perform as if they had 30 years of experience."
That framing carries weight in industries where expertise is aging out faster than it can be replaced. Petrochemicals, refining, energy, and manufacturing each face mounting pressure to improve efficiency and reduce unplanned downtime while operating with leaner workforces.
Embedding autonomous response capability at the control layer, a design choice that distinguishes Experion Cognition from AI tools grafted onto legacy infrastructure, gives operators a tighter feedback loop when process deviations emerge.
The Borouge pilot served as validation. Running the platform inside a functioning petrochemical facility, engineers confirmed that AI-driven autonomy could operate within a live environment without overriding the supervisory role human operators retain throughout.
Findings from that deployment are directly shaping the platform's refinement before its broader market release.
Yet the announcement also arrives at a moment of wider reckoning across heavy industry. Facilities that run continuously face compounding risks when institutional knowledge walks out the door with retiring workers.
Whether Experion Cognition can replicate that knowledge reliably at commercial scale remains the question the rollout will have to answer.
