KROHNE unveils an AI and ML pipeline leak detection platform at the 2026 API Pipeline Conference in Colorado
1 May 2026

US pipeline safety has a new benchmark. At the 2026 API Pipeline Conference in Aurora, Colorado, KROHNE unveiled a leak detection platform that marries artificial intelligence with machine learning to deliver real-time monitoring across midstream infrastructure. It is a notable step forward for an industry long reliant on slower, more error-prone methods.
The platform works by layering AI-driven pattern recognition over a physics-based simulation of the pipeline itself. Live sensor data is constantly compared against a virtual model, letting the system flag small leaks within minutes, catch illegal tapping, and cut the false alarms that routinely exhaust control room staff. It handles both liquid and gas pipelines, which broadens its appeal across US midstream networks considerably.
Cybersecurity is woven into the design from the ground up. As pipeline control systems grow more connected to enterprise IT networks, the attack surface expands with them. KROHNE built in secure data pathways, continuous vulnerability management, and lifecycle protection aligned to industry standards. New and existing installations both qualify.
The commercial model may matter just as much as the technology. KROHNE is offering Monitoring as a Service, a subscription structure that removes the need for a large capital outlay upfront. Smaller operators, many of whom face the same federal mandates from PHMSA as the industry's biggest players, have historically lagged on adopting advanced digital tools. A subscription path changes that calculus.
Timing is hard to ignore. US pipeline infrastructure is aging, regulatory pressure is tightening, and more than 50 percent of operators are still navigating the shift from periodic inspections to always-on monitoring. Platforms that combine detection precision with accessible pricing are landing in exactly the right market window. Adoption, by most signs, is set to accelerate.
