iFactory's AI fiber-optic system finds pipeline leaks as small as 0.1 gal/min in two minutes, replacing two-week manual checks

Fourteen days used to be the standard wait. That was how long it typically took midstream operators to spot a pipeline leak through manual inspection. iFactory, a monitoring firm, says its new platform cuts that wait to two minutes.
The system relies on fibre-optic cables laid alongside pipelines, paired with acoustic sensors that listen for the telltale hiss of escaping gas or liquid. It can detect leaks as small as 0.1 gallons a minute and locate them to within ten feet, a level of precision most operators managing thousands of miles of ageing pipe have never had.
Precision alone would not make the system useful if it also cried wolf. Machine learning does the filtering: false alarms fall below 8%, freeing control-room staff to chase real incidents rather than phantom ones. Sensors run around the clock, catching small leaks before they become expensive or dangerous ones.
Getting such a system installed without shutting down a pipeline for months was the harder engineering problem. iFactory's answer connects to existing control systems, called SCADA, through common protocols, so operators need not rip out what they already have. Installation takes six to twenty weeks, depending on how complex the site is.
The financial logic is straightforward. Faster detection means smaller emergency-response bills, less environmental liability, and less downtime eating into margins. For regulators and insurers increasingly focused on methane emissions, a two-minute detection window is a far easier number to defend than a two-week one.
None of this is unique to iFactory. Rivals are racing toward the same goal: sensor-driven monitoring that treats a pipeline less like a static asset and more like a patient hooked up to a heart monitor. As infrastructure ages and rules tighten, such systems look set to shift from marketing differentiator to basic requirement, one more cost of doing business rather than a luxury only the biggest operators can afford.
